"A new star in the world of piano"
-Rheinzeitung
The artistic vision of pianist Lal Karaalioğlu, born in Istanbul, reflects her deep conviction that music is a reflection of human existence and has the power to convey shared emotions and experiences. This belief shapes not only her solo and chamber music concerts but also her innovative projects. As part of the TONALi Stage Academy, Lal developed her interdisciplinary final project, SILA, which explores themes of home, migration, and identity by combining music with visual arts and calligraphy. Through this artistic approach, she captivates audiences with an emotional depth that harmonizes with her technical brilliance. This is also evident in the reviews from the music press: Rheinzeitung described her as a “a new star in the world of piano” while Fränkische Tag posed the question, “Will Lal Karaalioğlu eventually be in the same league as Hélène Grimaud?”
After completing her master’s degree at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover with Prof. Ewa Kupiec, she decided to further her artistic development at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin. There, she is pursuing an Artist Diploma under the guidance of Schaghajegh Nosrati, with a focus on the interdisciplinary connection between music and humanities. This approach allows her to deeply reflect on her artistic work, explore links between art and society, and gain new impulses for her art.
In recognition of her outstanding academic achievements and exceptional social engagement, Lal received the DAAD Prize from the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover in 2023. In October 2024, she was selected as a member of the prestigious Heidelberger Frühling LiedAkademie 2024/25, led by Thomas Hampson. After auditioning alongside soprano Neima Fischer, they decided to continue performing together as duo lané. In December, she made her debut at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin with her newly founded Nomad Quartet. She has been invited to perform at BeethovenFest 2025 as the only pianist in Talent Podium, a program highlighting five emerging artists. As part of the festival, she will not only take part in chamber concerts but will also make her solo recital debut in Bonn this September.
Lal has performed for renowned pianists, including Daniel Barenboim, Yefim Bronfman, Akiko Ebi, Janusz Olejniczak, Kevin Kenner, Pavel Gililov, Anna Malikova, Janina Fialkowska, and İdil Biret.
Lal Karaalioglu was born in Istanbul, where she studied at the German High School and the Istanbul State Conservatory. After graduating from both in 2017, she began her Bachelor’s degree at Hanover University of Music, Theater and Media with Prof. Ewa Kupiec. Since 2019, she has been performing regularly across Europe. She made her orchestral debut in 2016 with the Eskişehir State Symphony Orchestra and has since performed with renowned orchestras such as the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra and the Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra. She has frequently performed solo recitals in series such as Weltklassik am Klavier and the Campus Cleve Festival. Her artistic excellence has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Grand Prix and First Prize in Adana Rhapsody International Piano Competition 2022 and the Second Prize at the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition Mariánské Lázně 2022. In 2020, she was selected as a member of the “Women Stars of Tomorrow” project, supported by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. As part of the program, her ensemble Trio Hera was formed, and their performance was broadcast at the Istanbul Music Festival. Following this, Trio Hera continued to give concerts across Turkey.
Beyond her concert career, Lal is actively engaged in music education and creative teaching projects. In 2024, she led a composition workshop with composer Marie Awadis, focusing on works by female composers worldwide as well as original compositions by students. This project culminated in the concert performance Diabelli-Recomposed 2.0.
Lal Karaalioğlu’s interpretations are available on digital platforms, including her recording Timeless, which offers insight into her artistic sensitivity.
